Who we're looking for

The role of the Dean is set in the context of working collegially with Chapter and the wider Cathedral community. To be appointed as a Dean, you need to have been ordained for at least six years. Whilst previous Cathedral experience would be helpful, it is not an essential requirement for this role. The person appointed will ideally meet the qualities described below. Spiritual life

  • An imaginative and inspiring priest whose ministry is resourced by a life of prayer and deeply rooted in Christ
  • Committed to the best Anglican liturgical worship & choral tradition
  • Will bring dignity and excellence to Cathedral worship whilst being open to developing different styles from the breadth of the Anglican tradition

Theology

  • An articulate and engaging preacher and teacher, able to communicate the Gospel to a wide range of people
  • Demonstrates theological depth
  • Has a vision and understanding for Newcastle Cathedral to be a hub for worship, mission and hospitality

Vision for mission and delivery

  • Enthusiastic about the opportunities of Cathedral ministry and actively engaging with the wider diocese and community
  • Focussed on mission and has a track record of growing congregations
  • Has a desire to “grow the church and bring hope” to the people of the city and region
  • Has a track record of making things happen

Engagement in community life and public issues

  • Able to build partnerships with civic, community and business leaders
  • Can relate to and communicate with people from all walks of life
  • Shows concern for the marginalised

Formation of others

  • Has experience of developing and releasing the gifts of others

Leadership

  • A skilled team leader who demonstrates gravitas to win the confidence and respect of others
  • Facilitates collegial decision-making
  • Has experience of grasping nettles and taking difficult decisions
  • Brings experience of leading change and shows resilience when faced with setbacks

Management of resources and structures

  • Shows financial acumen and understands the financial and commercial challenges facing Cathedrals
  • Has experience of line managing other people
  • Brings experience of engaging with potential donors and grant makers to raise funds

Safeguarding

  • Understands the safeguarding challenges within Cathedral ministry and has experience of promoting the importance of safeguarding to others
